Responsibility along the entire value chain
Sustainability is not a fad at J.J. Darboven, but a commitment we live by. As a traditional family business, we are aware of our responsibility - towards the environment, our partners in the growing countries and our customers. Our current Sustainability Report 2023 shows the measures we have already implemented and the goals we have set ourselves for the future.
Sustainability starts at the source: responsibility in coffee cultivation
Coffee is an agricultural product and is therefore directly affected by climate change. Climate change poses one of the greatest challenges for coffee cultivation - with increasing weather extremes, water shortages and declining crop yields, among other things.
To counteract these developments, we at J.J. Darboven rely on sustainable procurement, long-term partnerships, suppliers and innovative projects:
- Shade tree project in Peru and Honduras: by planting shade trees, we help to stabilize the microclimate on the plantations, improve soil health and promote biodiversity.
- Commitment to responsible purchasing: Our goal is to source 100% of our green coffee from responsibly procured sources by 2030.
Climate protection in production: energy efficiency and COâ‚‚ reduction
The coffee roasting process is energy-intensive. We therefore continuously optimize our production processes to reduce energy consumption and COâ‚‚ emissions.
Our most important measures:
- Modern roasting facilities: in 2023, we commissioned a state-of-the-art tangential roaster, which reduces energy consumption by around 20%.
- Switch to renewable energies: We are increasingly relying on green electricity and plan to gradually electrify our vehicle fleet.
- Reduction of Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions: Our aim is to significantly reduce our direct and indirect emissions in accordance with the Science Based Targets (SBTi).
Packaging and circular economy: less waste, more recycling
Sustainability does not end with the coffee itself - packaging also plays a crucial role. Our strategy aims to minimize the use of packaging materials and switch to environmentally friendly alternatives.
Our progress:
- Use of recyclable mono-laminate films: tests for more sustainable packaging are already underway and we expect the first market-ready products in 2025.
- Reduction of aluminum in packaging: We want to reduce the proportion of aluminum by at least 70% by 2030.
- Reusable instead of disposable: We are increasingly using reusable solutions at our locations to reduce waste.
Sustainability as a corporate philosophy
Sustainability not only concerns environmental aspects, but also social responsibility and corporate governance. This is why we make targeted investments in the training of our employees, fair working conditions in the supply chain and transparent governance structures.
Our most important approaches:
- Employee development: training, further education opportunities and health programs strengthen our team.
- Involvement in networks: As a member of the German Coffee Association and other initiatives, we are committed to sustainable standards throughout the industry.
Together for a sustainable future
Our responsibility does not end with this report - it is an ongoing commitment. We are proud of what we have achieved, but we know that there is still a lot to do. That's why we continue to focus on innovation, collaboration and transparency to create sustainable solutions for the future.
